Oyo State’s Post Primary School Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has received an overwhelming response to its recent job vacancies, with a total of 62,000 applicants expressing interest in the available positions. The recruitment drive is for 7,000 teaching and 3,500 non-teaching roles across the state’s post-primary schools.
Pastor Akinade Alamu, Chairman of Oyo TESCOM, announced the figures during a press conference held on Thursday, July 25, at the Agodi Secretariat in Ibadan. He revealed that the computer-based test (CBT) for the recruitment exercise will take place from Monday, July 29 to August 2, 2024. All 62,000 applicants who passed the initial application phase will participate in the CBT.
The breakdown of applications includes 12,000 for non-teaching positions and 50,000 for teaching roles. Alamu justified the need for this new recruitment despite having hired approximately 5,000 teachers four years ago, citing staff shortages due to retirements, resignations, deaths, and relocations, including the ‘japa’ syndrome—a term referring to the trend of leaving the country for better opportunities.
He noted that around 700 teachers from the previous recruitment have resigned, prompting the need to fill these vacancies. To encourage retention, the government is considering providing incentives for teachers willing to work in rural areas.
The recruitment exercise is being conducted in collaboration with various agencies, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Establishment, the Office of the Head of Service, and the Ministry of Finance.
Pastor Alamu emphasized the Commission’s commitment to a transparent and credible process and advised applicants to avoid relying on rumors. Applicants can access their specific test schedules and other details via their online portals.
Governor Seyi Makinde, whom Alamu praised for his commitment to education, recognized the need to address gaps in secondary school staffing despite the previous recruitment efforts.
The CBT will be held at the University of Ibadan Distance Learning Centre, Computer-Based Testing Centre, Ajibode, Ibadan. Applicants are required to bring printed copies of their CBT examination schedules and application forms with their passports to the test center.
Alamu also mentioned that the Commission has arranged for necessary amenities, including tents, chairs, ambulance services, and security, to facilitate the smooth conduct of the exams.
Successful candidates from the CBT will be invited for oral interviews as part of the selection process.
