Gunmen Kidnap Over 20 Medical Students in Benue State

Benue State, Nigeria – In a shocking development, more than 20 medical and dental students, along with a house officer, have been abducted by gunmen in Benue State. The students, who were en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu, were ambushed around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Otukpo area.

The kidnapped victims are reportedly from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, according to reports by Vanguard. The incident has sent shockwaves across the medical community and beyond, as concerns about the safety and security of students in Nigeria continue to mount.

The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the abduction, stating that law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation. “Yes, the report of the kidnapping is true. It was received between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and an investigation is ongoing,” she said.

As of Friday, no official demand for ransom or conditions for the students’ release had been made, according to PUNCH Online. The lack of communication from the kidnappers has only heightened fears and concerns among the victims’ families and colleagues.

This latest abduction highlights the alarming rise in kidnapping incidents in Benue State and other parts of Nigeria. The state has increasingly become a hotspot for such crimes, with communities living in constant fear of abductions and attacks. In May, two female students from the Joseph Sarwuan University of Agriculture in Makurdi were kidnapped by gunmen. Similarly, in July, three staff members, including the acting Rector of Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, were abducted, with a ransom of N70 million demanded for their release.

The situation in Benue mirrors a broader surge in kidnappings across Nigeria, where criminal groups frequently target individuals and groups, often demanding substantial ransoms. This troubling trend underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect citizens and address the underlying factors fueling this wave of criminality.

Authorities are under increasing pressure to not only secure the release of the kidnapped students but also to implement long-term strategies to prevent such incidents in the future. As the investigation continues, the nation watches closely, hoping for a swift and safe resolution to this tragic situation.
