PDP’s Refusal to Sign Peace Accord Sparks Controversy Ahead of Edo Governorship Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has ignited controversy ahead of the Edo State governorship election on September 21 by refusing to sign a peace accord, as reported by The PUNCH. Of the 17 political parties vying in the election, the PDP is the only party that declined to endorse the agreement aimed at ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

The peace accord signing ceremony, held in Abuja, saw the participation of 16 out of the 17 political parties. The PDP, represented by State Chairman Anthony Aziegbemi and governorship candidate Asue Ighodalo, was present but chose not to sign. Aziegbemi cited the recent arrest and detention of 10 PDP members by the police in Abuja as the reason for their refusal.

“We are here to protest the arrest and detention of our members and to make it clear that the PDP will not sign the peace accord under these circumstances,” Aziegbemi stated.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, denied knowledge of the arrests during a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, further complicating the situation.

INEC’s Concern

Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, expressed concern over the PDP’s decision. He urged the PDP to reconsider, emphasizing that the peace accord was designed to foster a peaceful, free, and fair election.

“It is unfortunate that the PDP decided not to sign the accord. We hope they will reconsider and sign it to help ensure a smooth electoral process,” Oyekanmi said. Despite the PDP’s stance, Oyekanmi reassured that INEC remains confident in the commitment of the Edo people to a peaceful election and the assurances of security agencies.

Political Tensions Escalate

The decision of the PDP comes in the wake of a threatened withdrawal from the accord by the All Progressives Congress (APC). APC State Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, criticized the police for failing to arrest members of other parties involved in attacks on APC supporters. Tenebe claimed the police’s inaction influenced the APC’s decision to potentially withdraw from the peace agreement.

The APC’s Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, accused the PDP of undermining the peace process. “The PDP’s refusal to sign the accord indicates they may be plotting to disrupt the election,” he said.

Labour Party Weighs In

Sam Uruopa, Public Relations Officer of the Labour Party, expressed concern that the PDP’s refusal to sign the peace accord could lead to increased violence. Uruopa highlighted past incidents of violence involving both the APC and PDP and urged for a peaceful election environment.

PDP’s Demands and Conditions

In response to the controversy, the PDP has outlined specific conditions for their participation in the election. Aziegbemi has called for the redeployment of Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Prof. Anugbum Onuoha and Commissioner of Police Nemo Edwin-Iwo, citing alleged biases and past affiliations with other political figures.

PDP acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, stressed that their refusal to sign the accord was based on concerns over police and INEC impartiality. He emphasized their commitment to participating in the election while defending their votes, despite their concerns.

INEC’s Logistical Challenges

As the election approaches, INEC is also facing logistical challenges. With rising fuel prices, INEC plans to meet with transport unions to discuss transportation for election materials and personnel. Oyekanmi confirmed the meeting is scheduled for today in Benin City to address these concerns.

Conclusion

The refusal of the PDP to sign the peace accord has intensified the political climate ahead of the Edo governorship election, with accusations and counteraccusations flying between the parties. As the election date approaches, the focus will likely remain on resolving these issues to ensure a free and fair electoral process.
