Abuja — The Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled the judgment for a suit challenging Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje’s appointment as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to September 23, 2024.
Initially set for September 18, the court’s judgment was not delivered as planned. According to court officials, the judgment was not yet ready, and parties involved in the suit were notified of the new date.
The suit was filed by the North Central APC Forum, led by Saleh Zazzaga, and is represented by counsel Benjamin Davou. The plaintiffs are contesting Ganduje’s appointment on grounds that it contravenes the APC’s constitution.
The core of the plaintiffs’ argument is that Ganduje, from Kano State in the North West geo-political zone, was appointed in violation of the APC’s constitution, which they argue mandates that the National Chairman should come from the North Central zone. The plaintiffs contend that the appointment breached Article 31.5(1) f of the APC constitution and was beyond the authority of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
In their suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/599/2024, the plaintiffs have requested the court to bar Ganduje from continuing as APC Chairman. They also seek an order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognize any actions taken by the APC, including congresses, primaries, and nominations, since Ganduje assumed office on August 3, 2023.
