E-hailing Driver Files Petition Against Abia Lawmaker Over Alleged Assault

Abuja-based e-hailing driver Stephen Abuwatseya has filed a formal petition with Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, accusing House of Representatives member Hon. Alex Ikwechegh of assault, abuse of power, and threats of violence.

According to reports and a video circulating online, the alleged incident occurred on October 27, 2024, when Abuwatseya was tasked with delivering food to Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja. The driver stated that he adhered to established Bolt service guidelines by requesting that the lawmaker retrieve the delivery from outside the residence, rather than entering the premises.

The video reportedly captures Ikwechegh, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, verbally and physically assaulting the driver for what he perceived as a disrespectful request. The lawmaker allegedly slapped the driver multiple times and threatened to “make him disappear,” suggesting his political influence would prevent repercussions.

Abuwatseya’s petition, filed through attorney Marvin Omorogbe of Deji Adeyanju & Partners, urges authorities to investigate and prosecute Ikwechegh. It describes the incident as a breach of trust by an elected official and a significant threat to personal safety. The petition also highlights concerns over Ikwechegh’s alleged abuse of power, including Abuwatseya’s subsequent detention at the Maitama Police Station and the seizure of his vehicle by an Investigative Police Officer.

The Nigeria Police Force has acknowledged the incident, and the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has summoned Ikwechegh for questioning. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the party Ikwechegh represents, has also publicly condemned the alleged assault and indicated potential sanctions against him.
