Scores of demonstrators from Ondo State gathered at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, calling for the immediate redeployment of Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola. Chanting slogans and carrying signs reading “Mahmood: Redeploy Babalola Now” and “We Don’t Want a Repeat of Edo Fiasco,” the protesters blocked access to the INEC secretariat, demanding a meeting with INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The protest followed a similar call by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who recently urged Babalola’s removal, alleging her association with the All Progressives Congress could compromise electoral impartiality. At a Peoples Democratic Party rally in Akure, Makinde argued that Babalola’s strong connections in Ondo could jeopardize the neutrality essential for a fair election.
Ayo Adeyemi, Leader of the demonstrators and Convener of the Ondo Youth League, reiterated the concerns, stating, “We have no personal issue with Mrs. Babalola but cannot risk any perception of bias. Redeploying her is in the best interest of ensuring a credible election.”
Acknowledging Babalola’s qualifications, Adeyemi added, “We respect her achievements but believe she should be reassigned to avoid any potential conflict of interest.”
Responding to the protesters, INEC National Commissioner Major General Modibbo Alkali (retd.) praised the group’s conduct and assured them that the commission would review their petition. “INEC operates with impartiality,” he said, adding, “Your concerns will be thoroughly considered.”
