The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed speculations about his alleged governorship ambition, stating that his primary focus remains on strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Obasa made the clarification on Thursday during the presentation of the 2025 Lagos State budget by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He described the rumors of his political ambition as a misrepresentation by detractors and reaffirmed his commitment to party mobilization.
“I have made it a personal task to mobilise people on the platform of Mandate, which has been misconstrued by some political detractors as being a selfish aspiration to become governor,” Obasa said. “To the blackmailers, let me state unequivocally, our intention is to promote our party. Becoming governor is secondary and not something I have seriously considered.”
Addressing concerns about his eligibility for the governorship role, Obasa insisted he is not lacking in experience or youthfulness. He also dismissed claims that he sought validation from influential Lagos families to support a potential candidacy.
“I have never denied my roots in the Obasa family in Ojo, but I do not require local validation to contest. If I decide to run, I will do so from Agege,” he asserted.
Earlier during the plenary, the lawmakers unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the Speaker, reinforcing his leadership in the Assembly.
2025 Budget Presentation
Governor Sanwo-Olu presented the state’s N3 trillion budget for 2025, tagged the “Budget of Sustainability.” The budget comprises N2.597 trillion in total revenue and N408.9 billion in deficit financing.
With a 59% allocation to capital expenditure (N1.766 trillion) and 41% to recurrent expenditure (N1.239 trillion), the budget prioritizes infrastructure development and tourism. The revenue sources include N1.971 trillion in internally generated revenue and N626.1 billion from federal transfers.
In his remarks, Obasa described the budget as timely amidst economic challenges faced by Nigerians, urging citizens to remain hopeful as President Bola Tinubu’s administration works toward economic recovery.
This presentation underscores the Lagos government’s continued focus on sustainable development despite prevailing economic difficulties.
