The Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, Oba Sejiro James, has formally installed Alhaji Mohammed Umar as the Seriki Fulani of Badagry, Lagos State. The installation ceremony, held at Sito Gbethrome Community along the Semé expressway, drew Fulani socio-cultural leaders from across the South-West region and neighboring Benin Republic.
During the ceremony, Oba James presented Umar with the traditional staff of office and beads, emphasizing the Fulani people’s peaceful nature.
A Call for Peaceful Leadership
“Though the stool you are on is too high, you have been endorsed by God today, and He will be guarding you,” declared Oba James. He urged Umar to remain proactive in resolving tensions between pastoralists and farmers, advising him to appoint representatives across Badagry communities to ensure harmonious coexistence.
Chairman of the APC Arewa Communities in Lagos, Alhaji Saidu Yusuf, stressed the importance of collaboration between Fulani and Yoruba communities, advocating for unity over political differences.
“We should put politics apart and work for the development of our communities,” Yusuf stated.
Role of Traditional Leaders in Conflict Resolution
Alhaji Mohammed Laba, the Seriki Fulani of Abeokuta and Chairman of Miyetti Allah, South-West, highlighted the critical role of traditional leaders in addressing community conflicts.
“One of our own is being installed, we are happy to be in Badagry. This is grassroots, and it will spread everywhere,” Laba noted, calling for a crackdown on criminal activities among pastoralists and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.
Commitment to Development
In his acceptance speech, Alhaji Mohammed Umar pledged to address pressing issues such as poverty, education, and healthcare while preserving cultural heritage.
“We must preserve our traditions while embracing innovation and progress,” Umar said, urging adherence to community regulations on cattle rearing and support for Badagry’s development.
The Aholu of Dale Whedako, Oba Olusegun Wheto, prayed for wisdom for the new Seriki to lead effectively.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Oba Adekanmi Oyekanmi, the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, traditional chiefs, as well as representatives from the Nigeria Police and Army.
With his installation, Umar takes on a leadership role aimed at fostering unity and development within Badagry’s diverse communities while upholding the values of peace and tradition.
