Justin Trudeau Reportedly Poised to Resign Amid Party Dissent

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may step down as soon as Monday, according to reports from The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star. The anticipated resignation comes amid growing unrest within his Liberal Party and declining public support.

Sources within the party revealed that Trudeau, 53, is expected to announce his resignation ahead of the party’s national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday. While his office declined to comment when contacted by AFP, the reports suggest an announcement could occur within the next 24 hours.

Liberal Party in Limbo

If Trudeau resigns, his party would face a leadership vacuum just months before the legislative elections set for October. It remains unclear whether Trudeau would serve as interim leader or vacate the position immediately.

Trudeau’s popularity has plummeted recently, with his government narrowly surviving a series of no-confidence votes. Critics within his party have grown increasingly vocal, calling for new leadership.

Mounting Challenges

Trudeau’s tenure has been further strained by escalating tensions with incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. The trade friction prompted Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland to resign in December after clashing with Trudeau over the government’s response to Trump’s demands.

In an attempt to stabilize his administration, Trudeau reshuffled his cabinet later that month, replacing a third of his ministers. Despite these efforts, his government continues to face challenges, including a significant 20-point polling deficit against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

A Legacy in Question

Trudeau first rose to power in 2015, leading the Liberals to subsequent victories in 2019 and 2021. As the eldest son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, he brought a legacy of political charisma and a focus on progressive policies.

His government introduced Senate reforms, signed a new trade deal with the U.S., and implemented a carbon tax to address climate change. Trudeau also legalised cannabis, spearheaded a public inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women, and passed landmark legislation on medically assisted suicide.

Future Uncertain

Despite these achievements, Trudeau’s political future hangs in the balance. With his leadership under scrutiny and his party facing internal dissent, his next steps will determine not only his own legacy but also the direction of the Liberal Party as it prepares for an electoral showdown.

As Canada watches for an official announcement, the nation is bracing for a potential shift in its political landscape.
