Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has increased the proposed 2025 budget from ₦49.7 trillion to ₦54.2 trillion, attributing the adjustment to additional revenues generated by key government agencies.
In separate letters addressed to both the Senate and the House of Representatives, Tinubu outlined the sources of the increased revenue, which include ₦1.4 trillion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), ₦1.2 trillion from the Nigeria Customs Service, and ₦1.8 trillion from other government-owned agencies.
The letters were read during Wednesday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Following the announcement, Akpabio referred the President’s request to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for urgent review, assuring lawmakers that the budget would be finalized and passed before the end of February.
The budget increase comes amid ongoing economic reforms by the Tinubu administration, aimed at boosting government revenue and reducing reliance on external borrowing. The revised budget proposal will now undergo legislative scrutiny before receiving final approval.
Further details on the budget breakdown and implementation strategy are expected in the coming days.
