Speeding Driver Kills 12-Year-Old Girl, Injures Sister on Lagos BRT Lane

LAGOS – A tragic road accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl, while her 15-year-old sister sustained serious injuries after being struck by a speeding vehicle on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane.

The incident, which occurred at Ogundare Bus Stop around 3:35 PM on Monday, February 24, 2025, involved a yet-to-be-identified driver who was reportedly traveling at high speed on the restricted BRT lane.

Victims Rushed to Hospital

According to a statement by Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the two schoolgirls were on their way home when the accident occurred. They were immediately rushed to Orile-Agege General Hospital for emergency treatment.

“Unfortunately, the 12-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries, while her 15-year-old sister was later transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for further medical care,” Hundeyin said.

Police Launch Investigation

In response to the incident, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a thorough investigation and assured that all necessary measures will be taken to identify and apprehend the driver responsible.

“The Commissioner of Police commiserates with the bereaved family and assures that the police will ensure a speedy and conclusive investigation to bring the culprit to justice,” the statement read.

Safety Concerns & Police Advisory

Authorities have reiterated the dangers of unauthorized use of the BRT lane, warning that such violations put pedestrians and other road users at risk.

Motorists have been urged to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, observe speed limits, and prioritize pedestrian safety to prevent further tragedies.

The police have called for witnesses or anyone with information about the driver to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
