Asaba, March 17, 2025 – The Delta State Police Command has neutralized four suspected kidnappers and recovered an AK-47 rifle during an operation along the railway line in Agbarho.
State police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, detailing how the operation unfolded.
Armed Encounter with Kidnappers
According to Edafe, the operation stemmed from the arrest of a suspect on March 9, 2025, who was attempting to purchase AK-47 ammunition.
“During interrogation, the suspect revealed the location where the rifle was hidden. Operatives stormed the bush along the railway line in Agbarho, where gang members, upon sighting the police, engaged them in a fierce gun duel,” Edafe stated.
In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, four suspects sustained serious gunshot wounds and were later rushed to the General Hospital in Ughelli, where they were confirmed dead. Their bodies have been deposited in the hospital morgue, while efforts are ongoing to track down fleeing gang members.
Additional Arrest in Kidnapping Case
In a separate operation, the police arrested a kidnapping suspect, Abdulahi Isah, in connection with the abduction of a woman in Ibusa.
A resident, whose identity was withheld, reported that his friend’s wife was kidnapped on March 7, 2025, and that he personally delivered ransom money and food items to the kidnappers.
“Based on credible information, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ibusa Police Station, in collaboration with vigilantes, mobilized a patrol team and raided the kidnappers’ hideout, leading to the arrest of Abdulahi Isah,” Edafe said.
Police Commend Public Cooperation
Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, praised the proactive approach of the command and the support from members of the public, stating that their combined efforts are significantly reducing crime in the state.
Meanwhile, police have intensified efforts to apprehend other suspects linked to these criminal activities.
