Lagos, Nigeria – March 27, 2024 – The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has launched four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor speeding and traffic violations, aiming to improve road safety and traffic management across the state.
Announcing the initiative at a press briefing on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the new sites will enhance the functionality of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solution devices already in place.
“These checkpoint sites are strategically located to detect and deter overspeeding, which remains one of the leading causes of road accidents,” Osiyemi said.
He outlined the locations of the new speed detection checkpoints:
- Alapere, Ogudu Road – Speed limit: 80 km/h
- NITEL, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way – Speed limit: 60 km/h
Additionally, e-police sites have been established to monitor broader traffic violations at:
- Allen Avenue Road Junction
- Nurudeen Olowopopo Road
These e-police sites will detect offenses including running red lights, illegal U-turns, reverse driving, and lane indiscipline, ensuring stricter compliance with traffic regulations.
Fines and Automated Enforcement
Osiyemi emphasized that enforcement will begin immediately, with fines issued through SMS notifications by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS). Violators will receive details of their infractions and corresponding penalties.
- Red light violation – Fine: ₦20,000
