Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has fiercely responded to criticism from former club midfielder Nemanja Matic, who branded him “one of the worst” goalkeepers in the club’s history.
The war of words comes ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Europa League quarterfinal tie between Manchester United and Lyon, where Onana and Matic, now at Lyon, are set to face off.
The tension began when Onana, in a press conference, expressed confidence in United’s superiority over the French side, stating, “Of course, it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them.”
Matic, now playing for Lyon, quickly fired back, dismissing Onana’s claim with a sharp critique: “Onana said they’re way better than us? When you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history.”
On Wednesday, Onana responded in a post on X (formerly Twitter), clarifying that his comments were not meant to disrespect Lyon. “I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud,” he wrote.
Onana also took the opportunity to remind Matic of his achievements, adding, “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.” Matic, who joined United in 2017 and departed in 2022, failed to secure any silverware during his time at Old Trafford, while Onana has already claimed the FA Cup with United in 2024.
As the two prepare for their showdown in the Europa League, it’s clear the tension between them is only intensifying.
