Ibadan, Oyo State — Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to convene today (Monday) in Ibadan, Oyo State, for a crucial meeting aimed at addressing internal issues that threaten the unity and future of the opposition party.

The meeting, organized by the PDP Governors’ Forum, will focus on key concerns, including the controversial reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary. This follows a ruling by the Supreme Court on March 21, 2025, which invalidated previous decisions by lower courts that had briefly installed Sunday Udeh-Okoye in the position. Despite initially supporting Udeh-Okoye, the PDP has yet to issue a formal statement following the Supreme Court’s decision, with Anyanwu being reinstated as National Secretary. Anyanwu is a close ally of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, adding further complexity to the situation.

Another significant issue to be discussed is the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, particularly surrounding the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who also serves as the party’s Vice Chairman. The suspension followed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, intensifying the already volatile political climate in Rivers.

The PDP governors are expected to deliberate on the political ramifications of Fubara’s suspension for the party and its leadership. Additionally, discussions will include the involvement of former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, who has been advocating for a merger of opposition parties to create a stronger front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
