Members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) staged a protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance on Monday, decrying what they described as the government’s persistent neglect of workers’ welfare.

Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, the protesters gathered at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja to demand immediate action on a range of issues, including stagnant salaries, delayed allowances, and poor working conditions.

Speaking during the protest, TUC President Festus Osifo said the demonstration was a direct response to the federal government’s failure to implement agreements reached in previous negotiations. He warned that unless urgent steps are taken, the union would consider escalating its actions.

“We are here today because our welfare is no longer a priority to those in power,” Osifo said. “Civil servants are groaning under the weight of inflation, unpaid entitlements, and neglect. This protest is just the beginning if our demands are not met.”

The union is also calling for a review of the national minimum wage in light of the current economic realities, particularly rising costs of living and a weakening naira.

Officials at the Ministry of Finance were yet to issue a formal response as of press time.

The protest comes amid growing discontent within Nigeria’s labor sector, as unions nationwide continue to pressure the government for reforms and improved conditions for workers.
