Abia Police Interrogate Officers Over Viral Video of Civilian Assault

The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral Facebook video showing police officers allegedly manhandling a civilian in Umuahia.

According to a statement released on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the incident occurred on February 20 along Lagos Street, Umuahia. Following public outcry, the officers involved have been identified and are currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

“The Abia State Police Command is aware of a trending video on Facebook depicting some police officers manhandling a civilian. The incident is alleged to have occurred along Lagos Street, Umuahia, on 20/02/2025,” the statement read.

“The officers involved have been identified and are currently under interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The public will be updated after necessary administrative actions are taken against the erring officers.”

The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, condemned the officers’ actions, describing their conduct as a breach of professional standards and a violation of the rights of civilians.

CP Isa assured the public that under his leadership, the police force remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring officers exhibit professionalism and respect in their interactions with citizens.

“He reiterates that under his leadership, the command is committed to ensuring a professionally competent, rule of law-compliant, and people-friendly police force in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police,” the statement concluded.

The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected following the outcome of the interrogation.
