LAGOS, May 15, 2025 — The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has distanced itself from a faction of individuals claiming to represent the group and demanding the suspension of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, Afenifere described the group’s actions as unauthorised and not reflective of the position of the mainstream organisation.
“We wish to categorically state that the individuals who issued a statement calling for Akume’s suspension neither represent Afenifere nor speak on its behalf,” the group said.
The leadership noted that Afenifere, known for its advocacy for justice, federalism, and democratic governance, does not make hasty political pronouncements, especially without thorough consultation with its organs and elders.
The group warned the public to be wary of impostors using its name to pursue personal or politically motivated agendas, stressing that any official position from Afenifere would be made through its recognised spokespersons.
The controversy comes amid growing political tensions and criticism of some government appointments and policies, but Afenifere insists it remains committed to constructive dialogue and national unity.
The organisation urged members of the public and media to verify any future statements purportedly issued in its name.
