In a groundbreaking step toward digital gender equity, African nurses and midwives have launched the world’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy and empowerment movement for migrant women. The initiative “Leave No Woman Behind: The Global AI Literacy and Empowerment Campaign” aims to equip one million women, nurses, and girls with AI and digital leadership skills by 2030.
The global campaign, jointly convened by TechNurses Africa and The Global Institute of Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals (GiNMAHP), will officially debut on International Migrants Day, December 18, 2025, through a virtual global summit and a three-day AI bootcamp for women.
A Global First for Gender and Technology
The campaign marks a historic moment as nurses and midwives who make up the world’s largest female workforce take the lead in redefining migration through digital empowerment. Participants from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas will collaborate with AI industry leaders, policymakers, and gender advocates to close the global digital divide for women.
“AI must not become another tool of exclusion. It must be the new language of inclusion,” said Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah, Founder and Executive Director of GiNMAHP, and Co-Convener of the campaign. “These numbers are not just statistics; they are barriers waiting to be broken.”
According to global reports, 44% of core job skills will be disrupted by AI before 2027 (WEF 2023), yet only 22% of AI professionals worldwide are women (UNESCO 2021). In Sub-Saharan Africa, women occupy just 20–30% of tech roles, and fewer than 3% hold digital leadership positions in healthcare (WHO 2024).

Redefining Migration Through Digital Skills
The campaign’s Co-Convener and Co-Founder of TechNurses Africa, Josiah-Jackson Okesola (JayJay), emphasized that the future of migration will be defined by digital skills, not geographical borders.
“Migration is no longer about visas; it’s about having globally demanded skills,” he said. “We are creating a new kind of migration a digital migration where women cross borders through AI knowledge, not air tickets.”
Through mentorship, training, and cross-continental collaborations, participants will co-design AI-powered solutions that address challenges in healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, and community development.
Global Launch Highlights
The virtual launch on December 18 will feature:
- Goodwill messages from global and diaspora leaders.
- Keynote addresses from AI and gender-equality champions.
- Panel sessions linking AI policy with real-world practice.
- Storytelling sessions spotlighting migrant and diaspora innovators.
- The unveiling of the World’s First AI Innovation Hub for Migrant Nurses and Women.
A Call to Partnership
The organizers are inviting partnerships from governments, universities, NGOs, and private sector innovators committed to gender equity and ethical AI. The campaign aligns with the WHO Global Strategy on Digital Health (2020–2025) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 17).
“Empowering women with AI literacy is not charity; it is economic justice,” Professor Musah added. “When women understand and build technology, nations grow smarter, healthier, and more equal.”
