MADRID — June 12, 2025
New Real Madrid signing Trent Alexander-Arnold was officially unveiled at the Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday, declaring that the Spanish giants were the only club he would ever have considered leaving Liverpool for.
The 26-year-old England international, who came through the ranks at Anfield and spent his entire professional career there until now, described his move as a difficult but necessary decision.
“It was never a question of where, it was whether to go or not to go,” Alexander-Arnold said during his introductory press conference.
“If I was ever to leave Liverpool, it would only be to go to Real Madrid. That would be the only club for me.”
Despite initial criticism from Liverpool supporters after announcing his departure, Alexander-Arnold received a warm send-off on the final day of the Premier League season, having helped the Reds to a second league title under new boss Arne Slot.
His transfer to Madrid — completed for a fee despite his contract nearing expiration — was accelerated to ensure his availability for the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States. He signed a contract that will keep him at the Spanish capital until 2031.
Tribute to Madrid’s Legacy
Alexander-Arnold praised Real Madrid’s historic stature and said he was eager to help write the next chapter.
“A big reason why I joined is to be a part of that amazing history this club has,” he said. “To contribute to future success, joining an exciting young team full of potential.”
He joins the Xabi Alonso era at Real Madrid, with the former Liverpool and Spain midfielder taking over from Carlo Ancelotti. Alonso, who won the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool, is a key influence on Alexander-Arnold.
“I grew up watching him. Istanbul 2005 — that incredible final — I was a little kid seeing my team do something special with him in midfield,” the defender said.
“I told him he was a big idol of mine. Watching him pass the ball really inspired me.”
Positional Flexibility and Mentorship
Known for his passing range and technical prowess, Alexander-Arnold said he’s open to playing wherever Alonso needs him, including midfield roles.
“I’ll be a sponge around him. He’s got so much knowledge, as a player and now as a manager. I’m excited to learn as much as I can.”
He is expected to debut in Real Madrid’s Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal on June 18 in Miami, wearing the number 12 shirt, with “Trent” printed on the back.
“When I travel in Europe, people struggle with the double-barrelled surname,” he joked. “Trent is simpler — just easier for everyone.”
Madrid Aiming for Fresh Start
After a disappointing season under Ancelotti with no major silverware, Madrid are looking to rebound strongly under Alonso. Alongside Alexander-Arnold, the club also confirmed the signing of Dean Huijsen, a promising centre-back from Bournemouth.
“We head straight to America and our goal is to win the Club World Cup,” Alexander-Arnold said. “I’m looking to have a great start.”
He surprised many by addressing fans in Spanish at the presentation ceremony.
“Signing for Real Madrid does not happen every day. It’s a dream come true,” he said. “I know this is a big responsibility — but I’m ready to give everything.”
The move brings the curtain down on Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool chapter, but opens a new one filled with ambition at a club synonymous with European football greatness.
