ABUJA — Former President Muhammadu Buhari is unwell but not in critical condition, contrary to widespread media reports suggesting he had been admitted to an intensive care unit, his former aide has clarified.
Bashir Ahmad, who served as Special Assistant on Digital Media to President Buhari, issued a statement on Thursday to dispel what he described as “exaggerated claims” about the former president’s health status.
“In light of the recent media reports suggesting that former President Muhammadu Buhari is critically ill and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), we find it necessary to set the record straight,” Ahmad said.
While confirming that the 81-year-old ex-president is currently receiving medical care, Ahmad emphasised that Buhari remains stable and responsive to treatment.
“It is true that former President Buhari is unwell and is currently receiving medical attention. However, contrary to the exaggerated claims circulating in the media, he is stable and responding well to treatment, and we are optimistic about his full recovery,” he stated.
The clarification follows mounting speculation over Buhari’s health in recent days, with some outlets reporting he was in critical condition and receiving emergency care.
Ahmad thanked Nigerians and the international community for their expressions of concern and continued prayers.
“We appreciate the outpouring of prayers and goodwill from his supporters and well-wishers around the world. We continue to pray for his complete and speedy recovery,” the statement concluded.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, has faced recurring health challenges, some of which required extended medical stays abroad during his time in office. His health has remained a subject of public interest since leaving office last year.
