Manchester City are on the verge of completing a sensational deadline day signing, with Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma set to join from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth €35 million ($41 million).
The 26-year-old Italy international, who played a pivotal role in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season, has been deemed surplus to requirements following the arrival of 23-year-old Lucas Chevalier from Lille. PSG coach Luis Enrique has made it clear the Frenchman will be his first-choice keeper this campaign.
According to the PA news agency, City have now reached an agreement to bring Donnarumma to the Etihad, despite earlier reports suggesting the move would only happen if current No.1 Ederson departed.
City signed James Trafford from Burnley earlier this summer, but the 21-year-old has struggled to impress, starting all three of City’s Premier League fixtures so far.
Donnarumma’s imminent arrival signals Pep Guardiola’s intent to reinforce City’s goalkeeping options as the club aims to defend its domestic dominance and make another push for European glory.
