Washington, D.C. – Tech billionaire and White House senior advisor Elon Musk has sparked controversy after calling Senator Mark Kelly a “traitor” in response to the Arizona Democrat’s recent visit to Ukraine.

Kelly, a former NASA astronaut and U.S. Navy pilot, traveled to Ukraine over the weekend, reaffirming U.S. support for the war-torn nation as it battles Russia’s invasion, now in its third year. His visit comes amid President Donald Trump’s shift in foreign policy, which has seen a pause in U.S. military aid to Kyiv and a renewed push for diplomacy with Moscow.

Following his trip, Kelly posted on social media platform X, saying, “Just left Ukraine. What I saw proved to me we can’t give up on the Ukrainian people. Everyone wants this war to end, but any agreement has to protect Ukraine’s security and can’t be a giveaway to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.”

Musk, the world’s richest person and Trump’s top campaign donor, swiftly responded, writing, “You are a traitor.”

Kelly fired back, stating, “Traitor? Elon, if you don’t understand that defending freedom is a basic tenet of what makes America great and keeps us safe, maybe you should leave it to those of us who do.”

Political Fallout

The exchange has drawn strong reactions from both Democrats and Republicans. California Senator Adam Schiff defended Kelly, calling him a “hero” and branding Musk a “self-absorbed coward.”

Republican Congressman Don Bacon also criticized Musk’s remarks, telling CNN that, “It’s not decent, it’s not right… I don’t agree with Senator Kelly on some things, but we don’t call each other a traitor, and I think it reflects badly on the White House.”

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict continued, as U.S. and Ukrainian officials met in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to discuss a potential partial ceasefire with Russia. The talks follow Trump’s renewed engagement with Putin and increased pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate an end to the war—without the security guarantees Kyiv has been seeking.

Kelly, speaking to NBC, dismissed Musk’s criticism, saying, “He’s not a serious guy. He should go back to building rockets.”

As tensions mount both internationally and domestically, Musk’s remarks have reignited debate over the role of billionaire influencers in U.S. foreign policy and the ongoing divide over America’s support for Ukraine.
