Fasoranti Mourns Awujale, Hails His 62-Year Reign as Model of Integrity and Service

The Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, has paid a glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as a monarch whose life and reign epitomised integrity, wisdom, and unwavering service to the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large.

Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 91, after 62 years on the throne.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Fasoranti praised the late monarch as “an exemplary traditional ruler” whose legacy would be remembered for generations.

“The Awujale was one of the highly respected Yoruba Obas who exalted the position of royalty through his personal conduct and unshakable dedication to the people,” Fasoranti said. “From his early days in public service in the defunct Western Region to his return from the United Kingdom as a trained accountant and throughout his reign, he demonstrated focus, discipline, and a rare kind of leadership.”

Crowned on April 5, 1960, the then Prince Adetona became a member of the Western Region House of Chiefs and played significant roles in regional and national affairs, including serving as chairman of the Ogun State Council of Traditional Rulers.

Fasoranti also recalled the Awujale’s principled stand during Nigeria’s political crises, particularly his courageous involvement during the aftermath of the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

“His reign was marked by enlightened leadership, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to the Yoruba cause and national progress,” Fasoranti added.

The Afenifere leader further hailed the Awujale’s cultural legacy, particularly his role in elevating the Ojude-Oba festival into a globally recognised celebration of Yoruba heritage.

He expressed condolences to the Ogun State Government, the people of Ijebuland, the Yoruba nation, and Nigeria’s royal institutions, stating that Oba Adetona’s death marked the end of an era.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Fasoranti prayed.
