ABUJA, Nigeria – Malam Garba Shehu, former Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, has announced the imminent launch of his new book, “According to the President: Lessons from a presidential spokesman’s experience.” The book, authored by Shehu, is set to offer a unique perspective on the eight-year tenure of the immediate past Nigerian president.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Shehu revealed that the book is designed to be a valuable resource for students of communication, journalism practitioners, and researchers, providing comprehensive insights drawn from his extensive experience in presidential communications.
“The book is not a personal biography but a guide written to inspire students who aspire to have a career in journalism and public relations,” Shehu clarified. He added that it also serves as “an authoritative account of what President Buhari did with his eight years in office.”
Shehu explained that “According to the President” builds upon previous works by other former presidential aides, including Mr. Femi Adesina, offering further documentation of the Buhari administration’s achievements and historic decisions. The book aims to provide an intimate look at President Buhari’s governance style, even touching on personal details such as his dietary habits and attire for certain occasions.
Describing the book as analytical, informative, and rich with personal anecdotes, Shehu noted that it also shares experiences of various reporters and editors who interacted with him in his role as presidential spokesman. While acknowledging the challenge of fully encompassing the administration’s extensive work, policies, and programs within its 260 pages, Shehu expressed confidence that the book unequivocally highlights Buhari’s role in advancing Nigeria towards self-reliance.
He specifically cited the former president’s instillation of a culture of personal integrity and the establishment of new transparency benchmarks through initiatives such as the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Tax Identification Number (TIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPS), the Whistle Blower policy, and the widespread usage of the National Identity Number (NIN).
The launch date for “According to the President: Lessons from a presidential spokesman’s experience” is expected to be announced soon.
