Independence Day Celebrations Held Nationwide

Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside numerous dignitaries, attended the Independence Day Parade at the Aso Rock Villa on Tuesday, marking Nigeria’s 64th year of independence. The celebration included a display of military drills, a colorful parade, and cultural presentations, showcasing the country’s diversity and unity.

President Tinubu arrived at the venue around 10:10 AM with his wife, Oluremi, participating in the national salute and anthem before inspecting the Guard of Honour led by Lt. Col. Moshood Yusuf. The parade featured a combined Armed Forces color patrol and silent drills by the Brigade of Guards, culminating in a cultural display from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “Reflecting on the Past, Inspiring the Future,” emphasizing national unity amid economic challenges. The ceremony was President Tinubu’s second observance of Independence Day since taking office, with festivities relocated from Eagle Square back to the Villa as part of a low-key celebration in light of the economy’s state.

In his speech, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele underscored the need for collective efforts from all regions to address the nation’s socio-economic challenges, emphasizing that unity is essential for progress. “We must come together as Nigerians to make a difference,” he said.

Various state governors also marked the day with speeches urging citizens to embrace virtues of unity and resilience. In Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa called for national pride and productive engagement, while Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki encouraged residents to remain steadfast in their belief in a prosperous future for Nigeria.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde highlighted the importance of focusing on unity rather than division and declared a six-month extension of the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery Transport Scheme to support citizens.

Other governors, including Uba Sani of Kaduna and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for collaboration and commitment to democracy. Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State addressed the current economic challenges, urging citizens to reflect on their roles in building a prosperous nation.

As the celebrations continued, leaders across the country reiterated the importance of unity, resilience, and hope for a better Nigeria, urging citizens to remain patient and supportive of ongoing reforms aimed at national recovery.
