INEC Responds to Public Concerns Over Proposed Ward Delineation in Warri Federal Constituency

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to public concerns over the proposed delineation of wards in Warri Federal Constituency, assuring that no final decision has been made. This follows ongoing consultations sparked by a Supreme Court judgment that mandated the Commission to undertake the delineation process.

In a statement released on Thursday, Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, clarified that INEC is still in the consultation phase. The court ruling, delivered on December 2, 2022, directed the Commission to undertake the delineation in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West Local Government Areas.

In compliance with the ruling, INEC began consultations in February 2023, which will continue until July 2024. This process has involved extensive fieldwork and engagement with local communities, ultimately leading to the development of a draft report.

The most recent consultation took place on Friday, April 4, 2025, in Warri, where stakeholders were given copies of the draft report for review. The meeting aimed to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to raise concerns, offer suggestions, and ensure that all parties were included in the decision-making process.

INEC emphasized that the draft report is not a final decision, urging stakeholders to submit their observations for further deliberation. The Commission reassured the public that the ongoing consultation process would continue until an agreement was reached.

“The overall objective was to arrive at an amicable agreement endorsed by all the parties involved,” said INEC. “We urge representatives of the various stakeholders to submit their observations on the draft report, which will serve as the basis for further engagement.”

In light of the ongoing consultations, INEC also called for calm, urging all parties to refrain from any actions that could jeopardize peace and security in the constituency. The Commission reiterated its commitment to fairness, equity, and the rule of law throughout the process.

“We appeal to all stakeholders in the constituency to refrain from engaging in any activity that could threaten the peace and security of the area. The Commission will continue to operate based on fairness, equity, the rule of law, and in full consultation with all stakeholders,” the statement concluded.
