Kano Court Sentences Make-Up Artist to Six Months in Prison for Naira Abuse

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced a popular make-up artist, Abdullahi Huseini, also known as Amuscap, to six months in prison for abusing and mutilating the Nigerian currency during his wedding celebration.

Justice S.M. Shuaibu handed down the sentence after Huseini pleaded guilty to a one-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing him of violating Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which prohibits the tampering and abuse of Naira notes.

According to court records, the incident occurred on December 6, 2024, at the Ali Jita Event Centre in Kano, where Huseini was seen spraying ₦100,000 in ₦1,000 denominations while dancing during his wedding festivities.

“That you, Abdullahi Musa Huseini, on the 6th day of December, 2024… tampered with the sum ₦100,000… by spraying [it] on the said occasion and you thereby committed an offence,” the charge sheet read in part.

EFCC officials said Huseini was arrested after the agency received credible intelligence regarding his alleged involvement in deliberate currency mutilation. The anti-graft commission has intensified its clampdown on the abuse of the Naira at social events, which it considers a serious financial offence.

“The convict was arrested following credible intelligence on his involvement in the deliberate mutilation of the Nigerian currency by spraying it at his own wedding celebration,” the EFCC stated.

During the trial, EFCC prosecution counsel Zarami Mohammed presented facts and evidence to substantiate the charge. The court found Huseini guilty and imposed a six-month custodial sentence without the option of a fine.

“Investigations revealed that Huseini willfully defaced and abused the Naira notes in defiance of warnings and campaigns against the practice by the EFCC,” the Commission added.

The sentence reflects growing efforts by Nigerian authorities to discourage the public from defacing the Naira—a trend that has gained traction at parties and celebrations, despite repeated warnings from regulatory bodies.

With no alternative to imprisonment, Huseini is expected to serve the full six-month term.
