Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday announced the renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan in honour of the late former governor of the state, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo.
The announcement was made during a solemn interdenominational commendation service held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, as part of the funeral rites for the late statesman, who passed away just weeks before his 90th birthday.
Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde said:
“The institution will now be known as Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.”
The decision, according to the governor, is in recognition of Dr. Olunloyo’s immense contributions to the state and his pioneering role as the first rector of the institution.
Dr. Olunloyo, who served briefly as governor of Oyo State in the Second Republic, was a renowned mathematician, public intellectual, and a towering figure in the political and academic history of Nigeria.
His legacy, Makinde noted, would continue to inspire future generations.
“This is not just about honouring a man; it is about preserving a legacy of excellence, discipline, and service to Oyo State and Nigeria,” the governor added.
Dignitaries from across the political spectrum, including leaders from both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), attended the ceremony to pay their respects, highlighting the wide-reaching influence of the late governor.
Further details on the formal renaming process and commemorative plans are expected to be released by the state government in the coming days.
