Mbappé Haunts Monaco as Real Madrid Cruise to 6–1 Champions League Win

Kylian Mbappé struck twice against his former club as Real Madrid produced a scintillating attacking display to thrash Monaco 6–1 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, easing mounting pressure around the Spanish giants.

The French forward led the rout at the Santiago Bernabéu, while Vinícius Júnior also delivered an inspired performance, scoring a superb goal after facing criticism from home supporters in recent weeks. The emphatic victory strengthened Madrid’s push for a top-eight finish in the league phase.

New head coach Álvaro Arbeloa claimed his second win since replacing Xabi Alonso last week, with his side producing arguably their finest performance of the season. Jude Bellingham and Franco Mastantuono were also on the scoresheet, while Thilo Kehrer added to Monaco’s misery by diverting a Vinícius cross into his own net.

“The players won this game, with their effort and their quality,” Arbeloa told Movistar. “I loved their attitude and ambition — this is what all Madrid fans want to see.”

Mbappé, who has been in outstanding form despite Madrid’s recent inconsistencies, extended his lead at the top of the Champions League scoring charts with his 10th and 11th goals of the campaign. After missing Madrid’s Copa del Rey humiliation against Albacete, the striker has now scored in consecutive matches.

The opener arrived after just five minutes, as Mbappé calmly slotted home from inside the area following a knockdown by Federico Valverde from Mastantuono’s cut-back. He celebrated with teammates before apologising to the visiting Monaco supporters, the club where he first rose to prominence.

Madrid doubled their advantage with a devastating counter-attack. Eduardo Camavinga’s clever flick released Arda Güler, who fed Vinícius before the Brazilian squared for Mbappé to tuck home, narrowly onside.

Despite being outplayed, Monaco showed flashes of threat, with Jordan Teze striking the crossbar from distance and Thibaut Courtois called into action before the break. Madrid, however, pulled further clear soon after half-time when Vinícius selflessly set up Mastantuono, who swept home confidently.

The floodgates opened after 55 minutes as Kehrer turned Vinícius’ low cross into his own net. Moments later, Vinícius capped his display by firing into the top corner for his fifth goal, earning a warm embrace from Arbeloa as the earlier boos from the stands faded.

“This is my Vinícius,” said Aurélien Tchouaméni. “When we play well, the people here are very happy. Tonight was a very good night at the Bernabéu.”

Teze pulled one back for Monaco following an error by Dani Ceballos, but Madrid had the final word. Jude Bellingham rounded the goalkeeper in the 80th minute to complete the rout after a clever dummy from Dean Huijsen.

Tottenham Ease Pressure on Frank with Dortmund Win

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Tottenham Hotspur eased pressure on manager Thomas Frank with a dominant 2–0 victory over 10-man Borussia Dortmund in north London, lifting Spurs to fourth in the table.

Frank had faced growing unrest following a weekend defeat to West Ham, but his side responded with a composed display. Cristian Romero and Dominic Solanke scored in the first half, either side of Daniel Svensson’s red card for Dortmund.

Victory away at Eintracht Frankfurt in the final round of fixtures should secure Tottenham a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the last 16. Dortmund, by contrast, now appear destined for the play-off round.

Despite struggles in the Premier League, the Champions League has offered Tottenham a welcome reprieve, with four wins from four at home in Europe this season enough, for now, to give Frank breathing space amid a turbulent campaign.
