The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully reactivated a Dornier DO-228 aircraft that had been grounded for 23 years, showcasing its engineers’ and technicians’ growing technical expertise. The feat was announced on Wednesday in a statement by NAF spokesman Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, who described the achievement as a significant milestone for the Service’s quest for self-reliance in aviation maintenance.
A Showcase of Expertise
The aircraft, originally designated “5N-MPS” and previously operated by the defunct Ministry of Mines, Power, and Steel, had been grounded at the DANA facility in Kaduna since 2001. Following a Presidential Directive for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to transfer grounded assets to the NAF for evaluation, the Service undertook the challenge of restoring the Dornier aircraft, now redesignated as NAF 039.
The reactivation, conducted between June and September 2024, involved a team of five engineering officers and 40 technicians from the NAF’s 431 Engineering Group in Kaduna. The process required advanced engineering techniques, meticulous planning, and strict adherence to aviation standards.
Strategic Significance
Air Vice Marshal Akinboyewa emphasized the strategic implications of the achievement, stating:
“Beyond enhancing the NAF’s fleet, this success symbolizes the Service’s resolve to achieve self-reliance in aviation maintenance for operational effectiveness.”
The reactivation also reflects the effectiveness of the NAF’s investment in training its personnel, who demonstrated the capacity to undertake complex projects that would typically require outsourcing to foreign entities.
Broader Implications
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, hailed the engineers and technicians for their dedication and emphasized the broader significance of the project.
“The successful reactivation of NAF 039 is not just an operational gain; it is a statement of our capabilities and our commitment to self-reliance,” Abubakar said.
The project underscores the NAF’s commitment to optimizing resources, strengthening its fleet, and ensuring national security through operational excellence.
Reinforcing Self-Reliance
This milestone reinforces Nigeria’s competitive and comparative advantage in maintaining and restoring its fleet, marking a step forward in the NAF’s broader strategy to achieve aviation maintenance self-reliance. The success serves as both a morale booster for NAF personnel and a demonstration of the Service’s technical prowess.
The reactivation of the Dornier DO-228 aircraft highlights the importance of investing in local expertise and underscores the NAF’s resolve to minimize reliance on foreign contractors while enhancing its operational capabilities.
