The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has begun the destruction of unwholesome and substandard products valued at over ₦20 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The exercise, which took place on Thursday at the Moniya dumpsite, is part of the agency’s efforts to prevent harmful and expired products from re-entering the market and endangering public health.
Speaking during the exercise, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye represented by Mrs Florence Uba, Deputy Director, Pharmaceutical Division, Investigation and Enforcement, Apapa, Lagos said the products included falsified medicines, unwholesome processed foods, unsafe cosmetics, and expired items.
She explained that the destroyed products were seized from manufacturers, importers, and distributors, while others were voluntarily submitted by compliant companies, NGOs, and trade unions.
“The estimated street value of the products planned for destruction is ₦20 billion. NAFDAC remains committed to ensuring that the health of the nation is safeguarded,” Adeyeye stated.
She urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, and journalists to educate Nigerians on the dangers of patronising unlicensed drug sellers and unregistered pharmaceutical outlets.
Adeyeye also called for stronger public participation in the fight against substandard products, encouraging citizens to report suspicious drug activities to authorities.
The NAFDAC boss commended the Nigeria Customs Service for handing over more than 25 containers of seized items for destruction and appreciated the support of the Police, the Nigerian Army, the DSS, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, and other agencies.
“Together, we can protect the health and safety of all Nigerians,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that representatives of security agencies and the Ministry of Health were present at the exercise.
