NAFDAC Uncovers Fake Drugs, Expired Condoms in Lagos Market Crackdown

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has made shocking discoveries in its ongoing enforcement operation at the Idumota open drug market in Lagos.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the agency revealed that it had seized unregistered narcotics, counterfeit GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) medicines, and vaccines that were improperly stored, with some found in toilets.

The statement read, “In the ongoing enforcement operation at the Idumota open drug market, NAFDAC has uncovered more alarming products, including unregistered narcotics, counterfeit GSK medicines, and vaccines stored in toilets.”

During a raid on Tuesday, NAFDAC officials also seized expired condoms originally donated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which had been repackaged and sold under the name “Kiss Condom.”

Further findings included:

  • Banned drugs such as Analgin.
  • Vaccines that require cold chain storage but were found stored improperly.
  • Oxytocin, a maternal health drug, stored outside recommended temperature conditions.
  • Donated medical products being resold.

The agency reiterated its commitment to cracking down on counterfeit and substandard medicines, warning that such illegal practices pose severe health risks to consumers. NAFDAC vowed to continue its enforcement operations, targeting illegal drug networks and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
