In a continued wave of humanitarian support following the devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, the North South Power Foundation has donated essential food items to aid displaced residents affected by the tragedy.
The donation, made in Minna, the state capital, comes two weeks after a torrential downpour caused flash floods that killed nearly 200 people, destroyed over 50 houses, and displaced more than 3,000 residents.
Leading the delegation, Hassan Abdullahi, consultant on Corporate Social Responsibility to the Foundation, presented the relief materials to the state government on Tuesday. The donation includes:
- 50 bags of 25kg rice
- 50 bags of 25kg beans
- 50 bags of 10kg semovita
- 50 cartons of spaghetti
- 50 bags of salt
- 50 cartons of seasoning cubes
- 50 gallons of 5kg vegetable oil
- 50 gallons of 5kg palm oil
“We are here to express our heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate incident in Mokwa. These items represent our modest contribution towards easing the suffering of the victims,” Abdullahi said during the presentation.
He added that the Foundation, based in Shiroro, was committed to supporting communities in its operational areas and beyond, especially during times of crisis.
Receiving the items on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Ahmed Suleiman, commended the Foundation for its timely intervention.
“We sincerely appreciate this thoughtful gesture by North South Power Foundation. The items will be delivered to the affected victims without delay,” Suleiman said. “We pray that God continues to bless and uplift the Foundation for its consistent support.”
The North South Power Foundation’s intervention joins other major responses to the disaster. The Federal Government has pledged ₦2 billion for relocation and reconstruction efforts, while the Niger State Government has committed ₦1 billion. In solidarity, the Borno State Government donated ₦300 million, and Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, contributed ₦20 million.
The Mokwa flood, one of the deadliest in recent memory in Niger State, has triggered an outpouring of support from across the country, as public and private entities rally to assist the victims in rebuilding their lives.
