The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Oyo Sector Command has reported that 222 people died in road traffic crashes across the state in 2024, reflecting a decline from the 270 fatalities recorded in 2023.
In a statement issued in Ibadan and signed by the Sector Commander, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, the FRSC attributed the reduction to intensified stakeholder engagement and enforcement measures throughout the year.
According to the report, the state recorded 304 crashes in 2024, a significant decrease from 495 incidents in 2023. The number of injured persons also dropped from 1,321 in 2023 to 779 in 2024, while 1,795 people were involved in crashes in 2024 compared to 2,935 the previous year. Additionally, vehicle crashes reduced from 794 in 2023 to 412 in 2024.
Mrs. Alo credited the improved statistics to the corps’ strategic initiatives, including aggressive public sensitization campaigns and enforcement activities.
“In 2024, we adopted inclusive advocacy by sensitizing passengers to assert their rights and speak out when drivers exhibit reckless behavior,” she said.
The sector commander emphasized that the focus has shifted beyond drivers to passengers, urging them to play an active role in ensuring road safety.
“More passengers lose their lives in accidents than drivers. It is crucial for passengers to hold drivers accountable when traffic rules are flouted,” Alo added.
She reiterated the importance of road safety as a collective responsibility and urged both drivers and commuters to work together to prevent avoidable losses of life and property.
The FRSC pledged to continue its efforts in reducing road crashes and promoting safer roads across Oyo State.
