Petrol Tanker Explosion Claims 90 Lives in Jigawa State

JIGAWA, Oct. 16, 2024 — At least 90 people were confirmed dead following a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Tuesday night.

The tragic incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. near Khadija University, when the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a massive explosion. The driver, en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, reportedly veered off the road before the tanker ignited.

The Jigawa State Police Command spokesperson, Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the death toll on Wednesday, adding that 50 others have been hospitalized with varying degrees of injury. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the Ringim General Hospital.

“Despite repeated warnings for people to stay away from accident scenes involving fuel tankers, many still gather around such sites, leading to these tragic consequences,” Adam said, explaining that the mass casualties were a result of people gathering too close to the tanker after the crash.

A mass burial for the victims was scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. Authorities continue to urge the public to exercise caution and follow safety protocols during such incidents to prevent further tragedies.
