Police Arrest Gun-Running Suspects, Cultists in Delta State Sting Operations

Two residents of Okpanam in Delta State, Ekene Chroma, 36, and Okafor Jonathan, have been arrested for alleged involvement in gun running. The suspects, both natives of Aniocha North Local Government Area, were apprehended by operatives of the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) during a sting operation on Friday.

Delta State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Monday. According to Edafe, security operatives recovered two English single-barrel pistols and 110 live cartridges during a search of the suspects’ location.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that they were suspected of being involved in the business of gun running. The suspects and exhibits are presently in custody while the investigation is ongoing,” the statement read.

In a separate operation, also spearheaded by CP-SAT and led by ASP Julius Robinson, police acted on credible intelligence concerning cult-related activities in the Mosogar area and surrounding communities. Officers raided the residence of one Koko Josh, where a fabricated Beretta pistol loaded with two rounds of live ammunition, two locally made guns, and eight rounds of live cartridges were recovered.

Additionally, police seized multiple mobile phones, a laptop, and suspected fetish items during the search. Further investigation led to the arrest of two more individuals — Anthony Kelvin from Orhoakpor community in Ethiope East LGA and Gift Amotsuka from Jakpa community in Warri North LGA. All are believed to be members of the Aiye Confraternity, a known cult group.

The police confirmed that all suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the public for their collaboration in providing intelligence that enabled the operations. He appealed for sustained support from residents in the effort to curb crime and ensure the safety of the state.

“These achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the support of well-meaning members of the public. We encourage more citizens to partner with the police in building a safer Delta State,” Abaniwonda stated.
