The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested one of its officers accused of stabbing a civilian in Ise-Ekiti, following a domestic dispute linked to a disagreement between a schoolgirl and her classmate.

The incident, which gained widespread attention after a video posted online by the victim’s daughter went viral, allegedly involved an orderly attached to a local government chairman. In the video, the daughter claims her father was attacked in their home by the officer, after her younger brother had a disagreement with a female classmate—who is reportedly the officer’s girlfriend.

According to the daughter’s account, the girl reported the altercation to her boyfriend, prompting two police officers to storm their residence under the pretense of making an arrest. The situation escalated, culminating in one of the officers allegedly stabbing her father in the palm.

In response to public outcry, the Ekiti State Police Command issued a statement on Friday through its spokesperson, SP Abutu Sunday, confirming that the officer involved has been taken into custody. The Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph Eribo, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to assume control of the case and carry out a full investigation.

“The Ekiti State Police Command has noticed a video circulating on social media where a young girl was complaining that her father was stabbed on his palm by a policeman serving in Ise-Ekiti due to an argument that ensued between her brother and the policeman’s girlfriend,” the statement read.

SP Sunday added that the Command is committed to transparency and accountability, assuring the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and handled with the utmost seriousness.

“The command is calling on everyone, especially the family members of the victim, to remain calm, as nothing short of justice will be delivered in this case as soon as possible,” he said.

The identity of the officer and the status of the victim’s injuries have not yet been officially disclosed.

This incident adds to growing public scrutiny over police conduct in Nigeria, as concerns persist over the use of excessive force and abuse of authority in civilian matters.
