Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency, directing the Nigerian Police and Armed Forces to strengthen their personnel capacity to address rising insecurity across the country.
In a statement issued from the Statehouse, President Tinubu ordered the recruitment of 20,000 additional police officers, increasing the planned total intake to 50,000 personnel. The initiative is aimed at bolstering law enforcement presence and improving the nation’s capacity to respond to violent crimes, kidnappings, and insurgency threats.
To expedite training, the President authorised the use of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as temporary facilities for the new recruits.
The administration said further details on the recruitment process, deployment, and broader security measures would be provided in due course.
This declaration comes amid growing public concern over the surge in banditry, terrorism, and violent crimes in several parts of the country, prompting calls for urgent and comprehensive action from federal authorities.
