The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a notorious cultist and armed robbery suspect, Innocent Chigozie, during a raid on a hideout in Elele, Etche Local Government Area of the state.
The police described Chigozie as the leader of a violent cult gang that had been terrorizing farmers and residents in Okahia Community, particularly along Uzo Afor Road.
Suspect’s Criminal Activities
According to the spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspect and his gang had been involved in a series of criminal activities, including armed robbery and cult-related violence.
“Earlier last year, this same gang engaged police operatives in a gun battle but fled after being overpowered by our superior firepower,” Iringe-Koko stated.
The gang’s activities reportedly caused widespread panic and fear in the Elele and Okahia communities.
Arrest and Recovered Weapons
The suspect was apprehended on January 30, 2025, around 6:30 AM by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Rivers State Police Command through coordinated intelligence operations.
During the raid, police recovered the following weapons from Chigozie:
- One automatic pump-action gun
- Two live cartridges
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to owning the recovered exhibits,” the police spokesperson revealed.
Ongoing Investigation & Manhunt for Other Gang Members
The police have launched an intensive manhunt for Chigozie’s accomplices, who are currently on the run.
“The suspect and exhibits are in police custody. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to apprehend other fleeing gang members and recover more weapons,” Iringe-Koko confirmed.
The Rivers State Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
