Family, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers gathered in solemn reflection on Wednesday evening at the Corpus Christi Cathedral, D/Line, Port Harcourt, to pay their final respects to late Somtochukwu Maduagwu, the Arise TV news anchor and lawyer who tragically lost her life last month after an armed robbery attack at her Abuja residence.
The service of songs was filled with emotions as mourners recounted fond memories of Somtochukwu, popularly known as Sommie, whose career and character left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
Delivering the sermon, Rev. Father Eze Charles, who consoled the grieving family, reminded the congregation that death is an inevitable part of life but urged all to focus on living with purpose and integrity.
“It is not how long one lived on earth but how well and what impact the individual made,” the priest said. “We are all gathered here because of Sommie. What will friends and society say about you when you are gone? Nigeria, the whole world is bleeding because of Sommie. She was a good woman, a generous woman of faith, and a soldier of the Cross.”
Father Charles described the late broadcaster as “a kind and impactful soul” whose brief but meaningful life touched many, adding that her good works and faith in God would continue to speak for her even in death.
“This woman was a good woman. I am sure she has gone to be with the Lord. The number of years is not the true measure of one’s life. We encourage her family and all affected to be strong,” he said.
Also speaking, Rev. Father Martin Amadi, Cathedral Administrator of Corpus Christi, described Maduagwu as a “bright and shining light” who embodied excellence and compassion both in her profession and personal life.
“It is unfortunate that Sommie is no longer with us,” he said. “We commit her soul into God’s hands and pray that He consoles her immediate family and all who are affected by her death.”
Representing the family, Osi Maduagwu expressed deep gratitude to the church and the public for their support since the tragic incident.
“As a family, we solicit your continuous prayers,” he said softly, fighting back tears.
Maduagwu, who was widely admired for her professionalism and on-screen charisma, was reportedly attacked by armed robbers in her Abuja home last month, leading to her untimely death. Her passing sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s media industry, with colleagues and viewers describing her as a “rising star gone too soon.”
The service of songs marks the beginning of her final journey as preparations continue for her burial in Port Harcourt.
