Nollywood actor and director Tope Adebayo, popularly known for his role as Waheed in the hit TV series Jenifa’s Diary, has firmly dismissed long-standing rumours linking him romantically with veteran actress Faithia Balogun.

In a heartfelt interview on Baba Ibe TV’s YouTube channel, Adebayo expressed his dismay over the persistent gossip, stating that while he shares a strong bond with Faithia Balogun, it has always been platonic and professional.

“A rumour that broke my heart was when people accused someone like me of having an affair with Aunty Faithia. Does it make any sense?” Adebayo said, visibly pained by the speculation.

He clarified that their closeness stems from a deep, supportive relationship that began during a pivotal time in his career. According to Adebayo, Balogun played a crucial role in launching him as a director — a role even his father, the renowned actor Salami Adebayo (Oga Bello), initially doubted he could achieve.

“I told my father I wanted to become a director, but he laughed and said it wasn’t an easy task. That almost discouraged me,” he recounted.

It was Faithia Balogun who believed in his potential and offered him the opportunity to direct five of her film projects — a move that became a turning point in his professional journey.

“From that moment, the world began to believe in my ability, and that’s how my directorial career began. Some of those projects became major successes.”

He emphasized that gratitude and loyalty are at the heart of their enduring friendship.

“Fathia and I will continue to be close because she is my benefactor. Anyone who stands by you in your lowest moments deserves your loyalty for life.”

Adebayo also made a broader appeal to fans and the public, urging them to stop equating close relationships between men and women with romantic involvement.

“It just saddens my heart that people believe that because we are close, we must be dating. I appeal to our audience to eliminate that mindset.”

His comments have since sparked conversations online about gender dynamics in the entertainment industry and the tendency to misinterpret close professional bonds.
