Umahi Dismisses 2027 Opposition Coalition, Says Tinubu’s Reforms Are Working

Jere, Kaduna State | April 14, 2025 — The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has strongly criticised opposition groups planning a coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, declaring that their efforts are doomed to fail.

Speaking at the official flag-off of the 282km Abuja-Kano highway reconstruction project on Sunday, Umahi said the current administration’s reforms are already bearing fruit, as evidenced by improved international credit ratings and renewed investor confidence.

The project, valued at N777 billion, is expected to be completed within 14 months. According to Umahi, the road will be built to last “between 50 and 100 years,” signaling what he called a new era of infrastructure development under Tinubu’s leadership.

“The Fitch financial institution just a few days ago said the reforms of Mr. President are working,” Umahi stated. “Nigeria’s credit rating has been upgraded. The World Bank also confirmed this. So, who are these opposition figures darkening counsel without knowledge?”

Opposition Criticised for “Empty Talk”

Umahi accused opposition parties of engaging in what he called “destructive criticism” without offering viable policy alternatives.

“Talk is cheap when you’re not the one doing the job,” he said. “Opposition must be constructive. But I’ve never seen any of them provide alternatives to the reforms they criticise.”

Reiterating his support for President Tinubu, Umahi declared himself “a prophet,” saying Tinubu would serve two full terms in office.

“God has told me that President Bola Tinubu will do eight years. The same goes for Governor Uba Sani,” he said to applause from the gathered audience.

Ministry Launches Road Sector Scorecard Initiative

Umahi also announced that from May 1, the Ministry of Works will embark on a nationwide outreach to report on completed road and bridge projects under the Tinubu administration.

“We’ll begin zone-to-zone engagement to show Nigerians what Mr. President has done in infrastructure. We’re not just building roads; we’re building roads that last,” he said.

President Tinubu’s Message

Representing the President at the event, Kano State Governor Uba Sani described the Abuja-Kano road as a vital transportation link between the Federal Capital Territory and northern Nigeria.

“The reconstruction of this road will bring relief, development, jobs, and enhanced security. It will transform our regional economy,” Governor Sani said.

He also recalled personal efforts to fast-track the road’s rehabilitation, including advocacy as a senator and engagement with President Tinubu.

Sani commended the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for improving security along the corridor through coordinated security efforts and the implementation of the Kaduna Peace Model.

“Motorists can now travel on this road safely at any time of the day. This project is not just about roads; it’s about peace and economic revival,” he added.
