Updated: Death Toll Rises to 105 in Jigawa Petrol Tanker Explosion

MAJIYA, JIGAWA STATE, Oct. 16, 2024 — At least 105 people have been confirmed dead following a tragic petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The explosion occurred late on Tuesday night, October 15, when a tanker driver lost control near Khadija University, leading to a massive fire outbreak.

Shiisu Adam transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Birnin Kudu due to a shortage of available hospital beds.

“As I am talking to you now, the casualty figure is about 105, and the number of injured is 55, an increase from the earlier confirmed 50,” Adam said.

The tanker, which was en route from Kano to Nguru town in Yobe State, reportedly lost control before exploding. Many of the victims were among those who rushed to the scene to collect fuel from the tanker after the crash, leading to a significant number of casualties.

Due to the condition of the remains, a mass burial is being planned for the victims, many of whom were burned beyond recognition.

This tragic incident underscores the dangers of fuel-related accidents in Nigeria, especially in situations where people gather to collect fuel from tankers. Authorities have repeatedly warned the public to avoid such scenes to prevent further loss of life.
