The Class of 1975 of Atakumosa High School, Osu, celebrated its 50th graduation anniversary in grand style over the weekend, unveiling legacy projects worth over ₦20 million and reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of members and the development of their alma mater.
The milestone event, held on the school premises in Osu, Osun State, was attended by several members of the celebrated set, their families, and school officials. Three key projects were commissioned during the celebration: the beautification of the school compound, reconstruction of the school gate, and fencing of the school’s frontage all fully funded and executed by members of the Class of ’75.
Reuniting to Give Back
In her remarks, the Set Senior Girl and Chairperson, Mrs. Kofoworola Ogunbiyi-Ajelabi, expressed gratitude for the journey so far and praised the strong bond among the members, which had been rekindled over the past decade.
“Fifty good years, just like yesterday. How time flies! It is heartwarming to see that many of us have excelled in our various fieldsacademia, business, and public service both at home and in the diaspora,” she said.
The set began reconnecting in 2016, officially launched its communication platforms in 2017, and held its first virtual reunion in June 2020 with 30 members. By 2022, the group had completed and handed over a modern school gate and security post to the Atakumosa High School Old Students’ Association (AHSOSA).
Anniversary Projects and Contributions
To mark the golden jubilee, the Class of ’75 identified and executed three major development projects, culminating in the unveiling during the anniversary celebrations. Ogunbiyi-Ajelabi confirmed that all works were carried out by members of the set and that the combined cost of the initiatives was approximately ₦20 million.
“We paid our N1.7 million dues toward the school’s 60th Founder’s Day in 2023 and also took on two major projects fencing the school frontage and compound beautification,” she said.
She also acknowledged past and present teachers, offering a posthumous tribute to their late principal, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, who later became the Governor of Ondo State.
“He worked relentlessly to ensure we all passed out in good grades and followed up with our progress years after graduation. May his soul rest in peace,” she added.
A Lasting Bond
The Set has held three physical reunions in the last two years in Ilesa, Ibadan, and Epe bringing together members from across Nigeria and abroad. Ogunbiyi-Ajelabi described the group as a “blessed set” and a “pacesetter,” noting their continued support for one another, especially in matters of welfare.
Call for Government Support
Earlier at the event, Mr. Lateef Bakare, National President of AHSOSA and Ajirowa Adimula of Ijesaland, appealed to the Osun State Government to reinstate the boarding school system and expedite the teachers’ recruitment exercise to address staffing challenges in public schools.
Bakare, who recently donated a two-flat corps members’ lodge to the school in commemoration of his 70th birthday, said the Old Students’ Association remained committed to revitalizing the school’s legacy.
The Atakumosa High School Class of 1975’s golden jubilee celebration stands as a shining example of alumni impact, community spirit, and the enduring power of education to unite and uplift.
